It’s been another stellar month for Australian advertisers, with a number of newcomer brands pushing the creative boundaries and finding fresh and novel ways to disrupt, entertain, and ultimately keep their brands front of people’s minds.

But clawing its way to the top this month was PetSure’s “Randall”, which delivered an entertaining storyline touching on an all-too-familiar problem facing pet owners – resulting in a strong Cubery Rating of 6.5. That means the ad is predicted to do a strong job of building memory structures that will deliver long-term growth for the brand.

Developed by creative agency An Idea World, what makes the campaign special is taking a dry product category (pet insurance) and building around a simple, memorable truth. The creative insight is that pets are fearless, impulsive, and blissfully unaware of the financial consequences of their antics. That insight is immediately relatable to almost every pet owner, turning what could have been a rational message about accident cover into a humorous, emotionally engaging story. Rather than talking about policy features and benefits, the ad instead dramatized the problem the product solves, making the benefit intuitive (rather than needing to be explicitly spelt out).

The lovable anthropomorphized cat worked together with the quirky humor to create an emotional peak right when the brand was introduced. This resulted in a simple yet highly effective 15 second ad that did as much for the brand in the short term as the long.

Often, the best advertising strips things back to the basics. By wrapping a relatable tension in playful storytelling and a memorable character, PetSure has created an entertaining platform with plenty of scope to be evolved. It also demonstrates the power of prioritizing a distinctive creative approach over conforming heavily to category conventions.

Insurance advertising often defaults to reassurance, product claims, or fear-based messaging. Instead, the wider campaign platform creates ownable brand worlds with memorable characters, exaggerated animal expressions, and playful copy. The humor helps earn attention, while the recurring creative device reinforces the same strategic message across every touchpoint. It's a reminder that effective advertising must do more than simply communicate what the brand does – it needs to build mental associations that make the brand easier to notice, remember, and ultimately choose when the relevant buying situations arise.
